I remember many times when my emotions almost got the best of me in sales.  One time, I was doing a demo of an infusion pump I was selling for a Chief Nursing Officer and a few Nurses in his office.  As I did the demo, he was typing on his computer most of the time, not paying attention.  I could feel the anger heat up and my adrenaline burn.  ‘How rude,’ my self talk said in a distracting way.  But I decided to stay calm and not let this affect me.  Later, the Chief Nurse Officer said, ‘I was emailing our Chief of Logistics letting them know your product is the one we want to purchase.  I smiled, not solely because I was closer to making a sale, but the game that my emotions had just played on me.  Had I given into my emotions and confronted the CNO, it could have cost me a sale.  Losing control of our emotions can have a cost.  I once heard, ‘the quality of our life is determined by the emotions we consistently experience.’  As I was reading ‘The Greatest Salesman in the World,’ I came across this quote from Og Mandino:

Weak is he who permits his thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts. 

HABIT 6: THE POWER OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

In scroll 6, “The Greatest Salesman in the World:” The power of mastering emotions: focusing on emotional intelligence.  We learn that we will always experience emotions, ups and downs, but the key is to not allow our emotions to drive our actions, Instead, act spite emotion.  Some emotions are there to keep us safe, if we are walking down a dark street and we hear someone come up behind us, we experience a ‘fight or flight’ surge to protect us.  I am referring to the emotions that keep us stuck, ‘I am afraid, I am not going to ask for that promotion,’ ‘I feel tired this morning, I will work out tomorrow instead,’ or ‘I am afraid to call that prospect, they may say NO to me.’

What I have learned from studying, teaching, and living the power of mastering my emotions and building emotional intelligence:

•    When I act in spite of emotion, I build my self-confidence and my self worth

•    The quality of my life is determined by the quality of my emotions – make JOY my primary residence

•    When I feel negative emotions like anger, frustration, or fear, ask myself ‘what is the resistance behind this resistance?  What am I avoiding?’

•    Joy is our birthright – if a relationship, career, the past, the future, my job, or a situation I am involved in trigger unhappy emotions, let it go

•    Our intuition and feeling overwhelmed are a powerful reminder that our boundaries and being threatened – when you say NO what do you say YES to?
