Have you heard the saying, ‘getting started is the hardest part?’ I reflect on many instances of this in my life. I recently moved and there were many moments of getting started where I faced adversity and quitting could have been an option: a seller’s market with low available inventory, bidding wars, negotiating with an unmotivated seller on the purchase of a home, packing, moving, investing in renovations, and working with contractors, getting my fiancé into the US during the pandemic – the list goes on! One thing I did was stop and pause – I would visualize my new backyard and sometimes I would come to the new home and gaze out into the woods into the valley and remind myself of the peace in taking the steps of growth and transformation. As I was reading ‘The Greatest Salesman in the World,’ I came across this quote from Og Mandino:

Habit 4: The Power of Persistence. The Habit of Determination.

In scroll 3, “The Greatest Salesman in the World:” The power of persistence, we read about the power of staying the course, not quitting, no matter what the obstacle.  The obstacle most often is within ourselves!  We worry and look at the worst possible outcome – instead of powering through and getting to the other side in victory.  I often remind my sales professionals ‘if you don’t feel like quitting in the first 6 months, you are probably not working!’  In other words, it is normal to want to quit, but the key is: don’t let your thought habits sabotage you!

What I have learned from studying, teaching, and living the power of persistence

  • I never regret persisting, but I will always regret quitting

  • Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and glorious at the end!

  • Winners never quit, and quitters never win

  • The cave I fear to enter holds the treasure I seek inside

  • Part of personal growth means I will face adversity, and I will always feel uncomfortable outside my comfort zone
